Wichita State University Intensive English Language Center

The Intensive English Language Center, at Wichita State University, is a well-respected program for teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). The Intensive English Language Center, or IELC, was founded in 1976 and recently celebrated its 25th year of teaching English to international students. Since 1976, IELC has taught almost 7000 students from over 100 countries around the world.
The Program

  • Six levels (beginning through advanced levels)

  • Each level takes 8 weeks to complete

  • 25 hours of instruction per week (5 hours each weekday)

  • Students may study as little as 8 weeks or longer than one year - whatever is needed to achieve their needed level of proficiency

  • Classes include:

    • Reading

    • Writing

    • Speaking and Listening

    • Structure (English grammar)

    • Learning Laboratory - a laboratory utilizing computers and other audio-visual aids.

  • Elective classes are available in TOEFL Preparation and Pronunciation

  • Weekly conversation practice with conversation partners

  • Essay and research paper preparation

  • Students with academic admission may begin half-time undergraduate study with concurrent enrollment in Intensive English if they complete the Advanced II level of the English program or obtain a TOEFL score of 500 or higher on the paper-based TOEFL (or 173 on the computer-based TOEFL).

  • Undergraduate students with academic admission may begin full-time academic study without a TOEFL score after successful completion of the highest level of the program

Wichita State University

Wichita State University (WSU) is a public university, which has been enrolling international students for 75 years. We currently have almost 1,500 international students from over 110 different countries. There are approximately 15,000 students enrolled at WSU in our six faculties -- Business, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Health Professions, and Liberal Arts and Sciences.

  • Facilities: Wichita State has a large library with over 6 million items. Our engineering and science laboratories are modern and well equipped. Our beautiful, park-like campus has 65 buildings and is 1.5 square kilometers in size. The University has a large sports complex, basketball arena, baseball and softball stadiums, a large track stadium, a bowling alley, an 18-hole golf course, and a large tennis complex.

  • Service: Wichita State University processes most applications in only 3-4 days. The University will make arrangements to pick you up from the airport and assist you in moving into your dormitory room or private apartment. Our caring and supportive staff provides immigration counseling and assistance to international students. The University organizes activities for students including trips to museums, parks, sporting events, holiday and cultural festivals, and much more.
