The Economist Conferences
Presents
Third Roundtable on Healthcare Reform in Japan:
Maintaining momentum and charting the ongoing reform agenda
| September 19, 2002 |
Hotel Okura Tokyo |
Introduction
Just as reforms in other sectors of the economy have been called into question, healthcare reforms may stall at a time
of greatest need for progress - in a wide spectrum of healthcare-related service industries. At a time of such significant change -
even turmoil - we are witnessing new opportunities, both in being able to provide policy-level input, and to pursue business expansion
in a full range of healthcare-related fields in Japan.
Join the far-reaching debate on what is best for both patients and providers in a rapidly changing socio-economic and
political climate of increased transparence, accountability, and genuinely improved healthcare standards for the Japanese people.
The issues vary according to the specifics of each area of healthcare. Commonality is emerging amongst the range of stakeholders involved,
however, as they explore together their interest in the future of Japan's healthcare system. Some key issues include:
- Increasing the healthcare "pie" in an era of economic recession and fiscal restraints
- Broader pharmaceutical issues such as patient access, completion of delivery and deregulation
- Patient-centered care standards
- Transparency and accountability in healthcare services
- Cost-effective provision of highest-quality, cutting-edge medical equipment
- Accreditation, continuing education, and the ongoing need for centres of excellence.
Industry sectors covered:
- Medical devices
- Pharmaceuticals
- Healthcare services
- Government: Ministry of Health, Labour & Welfare; Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry; political spectrum
- Doctor's groups, Patient groups, and hospital administrators
