About College & University Rankings
Various guidebooks, the press, and the media have helped glamorize school rankings. Although the rankings
themselves and their methodology are often subject to controversy, their popularity among the general public, potential applicants,
and employers is unquestionable. A school's ranking can also have a significant impact on the quality of its applicants,
faculty, and recruiters. However, keep in mind that there are no official rankings of universities (endorsed by a country's
Department / Ministry of Education), and none offer a perfect measure of an institution's quality.
For that reason, use rankings as a starting point to familiarize yourself with certain schools, but keep in mind that:
- Rankings do not capture each school's individuality or fairly represent its qualities.
- Rankings are not exhaustive--they often only cover a percentage of the total number of institutions.
- Statistics can easily be misinterpreted when taken out of context--beware of rankings that fail to adequately explain
their methodology.
- Rankings are not available for every individual subject or major.
- The sales of rankings publications would decrease if everything on the list stayed in the same order from one issue date to
the next (or from one publication to the next).
- Rankings are tailored to domestic students' perceived needs--international students often have many other needs that are not
included in the rankings.
Rankings should never be used as a shortcut to doing thorough research into suitable programs. Examine closely the criteria used to
compile the ranking and then compare with your own criteria for what makes a good program. How well a particular program matches your
educational background, academic abilities, and career goals should always be the most important consideration in
selecting a school.
