Anthony Boccaccio began his
photographic career with National Geographic Magazine at the
age of twenty-one. A world-class photographer, presenter and
teacher, Boccaccio has photographed in over 30 countries in as many
years. Like most photographers, he is a series of contrasts. He is
probably most well known for his beautiful travel shots, yet when
working with the human figure, his sensitivity rivals that of the
great painters.
His client list is straight from the Fortune
500 - Ikegami, IBM, Kodak, Hewlett Packard, Time, H.T.H. Corporation
of Japan, Newsweek, National Geographic, Apple Computer, Hilton
Hotels, just to name a few. He is the author of
Where Madness Follows - The Search For Gold in the Amazon Jungle,
a captivating photographic essay
about the the gold rush in Brazil's Amazon Forest.
Fluent
in Italian (and Portuguese) and well-versed in Italian culture and
history, Boccaccio is the ultimate combination of photographer,
artist, guide and teacher. In addition to photography, he is also a
painter, a classical pianist, a 25 year practitioner of Goju Ryu karate and
has studied sculpture in Rome under Alessandro Nocera, one of Rome's
most gifted sculptors. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from
the University of Rochester, has studied classical piano at The
Eastman School o f
Music and holds a Masters of Education degree from Gonzaga
University in Washington
State. He
has taught visual thinking & photography at Gonzaga University and
Loyola University Rome Center Campus. He is an Associate Professor
at Spokane Falls Community College and a member
of the Washington State Community Colleges Advisory Board for
Advertising Arts Curriculum.
OVERVIEW
IMAGING IN ITALY
is a week-long series of stimulating photographic
and visual workshops designed to teach you how to
see, think and create like the great artists,
innovators and photographers from the Renaissance to
our modern age. Throughout the week you will
discover how to think with
the visual sense, how to use your mind's eye to tap
into your inner imaginative resources and how
to apply
these and other skills in practical and creative
ways to your photography - indeed to all areas of
your
life.
We will lead you through a series of engaging
photographic workshops, visual experiences and
practical skill-building activities will enhance and
vitalize your photography as well as any creative
activity involving imagination and visioning.
THE ETERNAL CITY
of ROME
No other city on Earth radiates such a powerful sense of the
infinite and the universal as Rome, the Eternal City. Yet at the
same time she remains both intimate and gracious. Her history spans
almost three hundred centuries, leaving an indelible mark on art,
architecture, religion and law. She bore great saints and
statesmen, philosophers and writers, visionaries and thinkers. She
crowned popes and princes, produced great works by Michelangelo,
Rafael, Bernini and other geniuses of the Renaissance.
Her contribution to the Modern World is inestimable. For centuries
she has always attracted men and women o f vision whose imagination
and creativity transformed the world. Rome is the perfect classroom
to explore and discover new ways of seeing, thinking and imagining.
This is here where Imaging In Italy takes place – among ancient
ruins, glorious cathedrals, heroic monuments, colorful open markets
and light-filled piazzas bustling with artists, musicians, and
magnificent fountains. This will be a celebration of the senses and
there could be no better place to learn the art of seeing and
photography than in the living and vibrant classroom of Rome.
Each day will feature a photographic session conducted personally
by Anthony Boccaccio on site in the Old City of Rome - a fascinating
labyrinth of winding cobblestone streets lined with quaint osterias,
antique stores, and the ever-present café where you can savor creamy
gelato or the famous Italian cappuccino. You will see and
photograph great monuments, picturesque piazzas, famous cathedrals
and the vibrant life of Rome. This is indeed a visual feast and a
treat for all the senses that will offer you a captivating glimpse
of life in Rome as it is today and in many ways, has been since
before the
time of Columbus.

ACCOMMODATIONS
You will stay in Hotel Alessandrino,
a charming hotel near the center of the Centro Storico
— the Old City, walking
distance to ancient monuments, great cathedrals, colorful open
markets and bustling piazzas filled with sidewalk artists and
magnificent fountains. You will explore inviting cobblestone streets
lined with quaint osterias, antique stores and sidewalk
cafes where you can savor gelato or sip the famous
Italian cappuccino.
THE PROGRAM
The daily
itinerary
will include an in-depth photographic workshops held
on location in the Old City of Rome. Led by
Anthony Boccaccio, you will see and photograph
historic monuments, picturesque piazzas, renowned
cathedrals and the vibrant life of Rome in all its
splendor and glory. T his is indeed a visual feast
and a treat for all the senses that will offer you a
captivating glimpse of life in Rome as it is today
and in many ways, has been since before the time of
Columbus.
Our method is simple - we will approach the
art of seeing and photography through the avenue of
your own experience. This experiential
approach is designed to help you acquire visual
skills through engaging short exercises, group
activities, on-site workshops and of course, your
own photography. Our goal is to help you sharpen
your photographic vision and to integrate that
visual sense with thinking and imagination.
You will have the opportunity to put your new
skills to use as you walk through Rome making
photographs. By testing your newfound abilities this
way, you will sharpen your photographic skills
through personal, active and informed experience.
Throughout the week, you will begin to acquire a set
of visual skills and photographic strategies
designed to help you actually meet the challenge
of making great photographs.

Imaging In Italy
will transform the way you see and think about the world around you.
You will learn practical visual and photographic skills which will
allow you to capture the richness and romance of Rome, skills you
will carry away for use in any future setting. Through on-site
photography, informed teaching, group activities, engaging
experiences and self-expression, you will
learn to use the same tools and skills practiced and refined by
innovative photographers, artists, writers, and creative thinkers
from the Renaissance to the present.
This is indeed a visual feast and a treat for all
the senses, a truly captivating encounter with both modern and
ancient Rome. You will take away a treasure of lasting memories,
