For residents of Japan, overseas programs have a lot of appeal in terms of adventure, language acquisition, professional development, fun, sports and cultural activities and making new friends from around the world.

Here are some representative programs that cater to various needs in a variety of safe locations in countries where English is widely spoken.

For high school students, the Lester B. Pearson School Board program in Montreal, Quebec, Canada offers a unique program in Canada's most European city.

Students have an opportunity to improve their English language skills by attending intensive English-as-a-Second Language courses and can learn about advanced science and technology development by participating in various scientific activities and training. Homestays with local host families provide an opportunity to learn more about Montreal, Quebec and the unique culture there. The program includes field trips to Ottawa (Canada's capital city), Toronto (Canada's largest city) and Niagara Falls.

The Ottawa-Carleton School District School Board offers a fun English language and sports/activities programs in Canada's national capital city. It is for 13-18 year old students and runs from July 23 to August 17. Participants will join students from a number of countries around the world and will have the opportunity to enjoy horseback riding, canoeing and other water sports. Accommodation is with local families so there will be an opportunity to learn more about Ottawa and its unique position as the "centre of Canada."

Carleton University in Ottawa is one of Canada's leading universities and hosts intensive training programs for professors/instructors of English as a Second Language (ESL).
