INTERESTING OVERSEAS SUMMER PROGRAMS

For residents of Japan, overseas programs have a lot of appeal
in terms of adventure, language acquisition, professional development, fun,
sports and cultural activities and making new friends from around the world.
Here are some representative programs that cater to various needs in a variety
of safe locations in countries where English is widely spoken.
For high school students, the Lester B. Pearson School Board program in
Montreal, Quebec, Canada offers a unique program in Canada's most European city.
Students have an opportunity to improve their English language skills by
attending intensive English-as-a-Second Language courses and can learn about
advanced science and technology development by participating in various
scientific activities and training. Homestays with local host families provide
an opportunity to learn more about Montreal, Quebec and the unique culture
there. The program includes field trips to Ottawa (Canada's capital city),
Toronto (Canada's largest city) and Niagara Falls.
The Ottawa-Carleton School District School Board offers a fun English language
and sports/activities programs in Canada's national capital city. It is for
13-18 year old students and runs from July 23 to August 17. Participants will
join students from a number of countries around the world and will have the
opportunity to enjoy horseback riding, canoeing and other water sports.
Accommodation is with local families so there will be an opportunity to learn
more about Ottawa and its unique position as the "centre of Canada."
Braemar College, in downtown Toronto has summer programs for 10-13 year olds and
14-17 year olds that take place on the main campus of the University of Toronto.
These summer programs are designed especially to help high school aged students
prepare for full time academic programs and include ESL, academic training,
cultural and sporting activities, and excursions in and around Toronto.
Carleton University in Ottawa is one of Canada's leading universities and hosts
intensive training programs for professors/instructors of English as a Second
Language (ESL).
Carleton University has one of Canada's most beautiful university campuses and
the summer months are warm but not hot or humid. The program includes excursions
in and around Ottawa and cross-cultural activities.
New York-based Academic Study Associates (ASA) offers a wide variety of summer
academic preparatory (Pre-college) programs in the US, UK, and Italy and
intensive language programs in Spain, France and Costa Rica.
The Four-week programs for high school students are held at UMass-Amherst
(Massachusetts) and UC Berkeley (California). These include engaging classes
including SAT prep and essay writing, visits to top colleges and San Francisco,
Boston, or New York, plus a wide variety of fun activities.
California School of English is located in Temecula, a highly desirable area of
southern California, close to Los Angeles and San Diego. Temecula is noted for
its wineries and championship golf courses. This small city is clean, modern and
safe and has abundant facilities and areas of interest. It is close to
mountains, deserts and beaches and visits to these are included in the summer
programs.
The summer English and American Culture program includes daily English lessons
with interesting afternoon activities, excursions and homestays with local
families.
The summer English with Sports programs include morning English lessons with
afternoon sports training with qualified coaches, matches against local teams,
and trips to watch famous athletes on professional sports teams. This program is
suitable for male or female school teams or club teams, ages 12+.
For those who are interested in Executive Programs, Tuck Executive Education at
Dartmouth in Hanover, New Hampshire, offers leading edge executive short-term,
intensive, summer programs.
The Smith-Tuck Global Leaders Program for Women prepares female executives for
management and leadership responsibilities that are global in scope and runs
June 18-21.
The Leadership & Strategic Impact Program links leadership development to
organizational performance and transformation. Participants learn how leadership
behaviors influence the strategic process, explore effectiveness as a leader and
learn skills to inspire others to extraordinary performance. It is scheduled for
June 24-29.
The Tuck Executive Program is a general management and leadership program that
helps senior managers acquire critical skills and vision to lead organizations.
Participants can sharpen their management perspective and integrate
cross-functional expertise into strategic management processes and learn new
approaches to lead and manage change and innovation. It compels them to take an
inventory their strengths and weaknesses as a leader and develop the skills to
drive breakout performance. It is scheduled for July 21- August 10.
For those who are interested in going to the UK, Aberystwyth University is
located in Aberystwyth, a safe, attractive and friendly seaside town on the West
Coast of Wales and was founded in 1872. The "Summer in Wales" programs run from
June to September (various programs of varying length) and students are housed
on campus.
As these are the only academic/ESL programs in town, participants are welcomed
by the local residents and there are plenty of opportunities for interaction and
joint activities. The relative low cost and high quality make these programs
unique within the UK.
The Millfield School offers friendly summer ESL and activities classes in a warm
and friendly environment in the UK. The Millfield School is very flexible and
can accommodate individual students of all ages and levels, group study tours
and parent-child programs. School excursions within the UK are both included in
regular programs and can be added as options.
