Tama University Graduate School

Having received approval from the Ministry of Education in March of 1993, Tama University Graduate School began offering evening courses leading to a Master's degree in Information Management to a fixed enrollment of 20 students. In March of 1995, Tama University Graduate School was subsequently approved to offer a Doctoral degree to a fixed enrollment of 5 students. This evening Doctoral program was the first of its kind in Japan, and has been structured to allow those who have already attained a Master's degree (or those with equivalent work-related experience and qualifications) to further their studies and advance to the highest level of their profession while maintaining full-time employment. In April of 1998, the fixed enrollment numbers were increased to 40 students for the Master's program and 10 students for the Doctoral program. As of March 2002, 156 Master's degrees and 6 Doctoral degrees have been awarded, while another 80 Master's students and 10 Doctoral students continue to work towards their respective qualifications.

ImageTama University Graduate School (TGS) continues to enroll and educate increasing numbers of working professionals at the graduate level. Just as companies, government, and municipal offices must continue to evolve and change with the times, their employees must be prepared for ever-changing environmental conditions and possess the necessary problem-solving capabilities. Flexibility, creativity, and the ability to adapt quickly to change are absolutely critical in this age of computerization and globalization. A tremendous synergy is created between the real-world problems encountered in the daily business operations of our student and the studies and knowledge provided by our professors and lecturers. This synergy not only provides a source of vitality to TGS, but also creates opportunities for meaningful exchange and deepened relationships between student and teacher. TGS takes great pride in continuing to produce talented individuals capable of analyzing and resolving problems through a combination of superior knowledge and technology.

Special Features

Image"Gain Practical Skills and Knowledge"
As a pioneer in Japan for studies in the field of Information Management, TGS provides the ideal learning environment for aspiring business professionals. A strong emphasis is also placed upon development of managerial skills in organizational environments, making many aspects of the curriculum similar to that of an MBA. In addition, most lecturers have extensive real-world experience and the various backgrounds of fellow graduate students create an interesting and colorful academic environment.

"Maintain Full-time Employment"
Tama University Graduate School is a graduate school for professionals who do not want to leave their current job in order to upgrade their skills and qualifications. Therefore, most lectures are held on Saturdays, and evening classes are held on weeknights. Classes are held in Meguro, a central location in Tokyo, and begin at 6:30 PM, making it very convenient for most working professionals. Studies also progress gradually, providing students with a firm and solid foundation of knowledge. TGS also provides a variety of support services to assist graduate students.

"Networking and Relationship Building"
Tama University Graduate School has an excellent reputation for the quality of its instruction and the exchange between its students and teachers. One teacher usually advises no more than three students leading to maximum exchange of ideas, as well as very efficient transference of skills and knowledge. Furthermore, students are able to choose two or more teachers to act as their advisor for their thesis. Since the other graduate students are all of various ages, occupations, and backgrounds, students are able to build up a dynamic network for present and future situations. Finally, rather unusual for a graduate school, TGS has a very active alumni organization.

"Research Directly Applicable to your Everyday Job"
Tama University Graduate School places the utmost respect on independent studies and research. As a result, there are no compulsory subjects. Individuals are able to choose freely from the subjects offered and design a curriculum that best meets their needs and interests. Moreover, students may also propose and create a new business model instead of writing the traditional master's thesis. Students are provided with the necessary resources and support to complete an original business plan.

"Maximize your Return on Investment"
Tama University Graduate School has arranged a prominent teaching faculty, composed of distinguished lecturers and professionals from corporations, government and municipal offices, and the mass media. This is a fact that TGS takes great pride in and cannot be replicated by other graduate schools. TGS places individuals in direct contact with industry leaders and business professionals, creating an environment capable of producing unequalled knowledge, creativity and innovation.
