University of Essex
The University of Essex is a compact, friendly and informal campus university, with a lively international community from over 110 countries. Only 50 minutes from London by train, with self-catering university accommodation guaranteed throughout the course at reasonable rents, and excellent support services for Japanese students.

How good is the University of Essex academically?
Founded in 1964 as a state-funded university, Essex is now rated 11th overall for research - 94% of its staff work in departments officially in the top grades of 4 , 5 or 5*. All official assessments of departments' teaching quality have produced scores of at least 20 points, and in some cases the maximum possible 24 points.

What can I study?
The University of Essex concentrates on selected subjects, resulting in centres of excellence in English Teaching & Linguistics, Politics & International Relations, Sociology, Economics, Law, Literature & Humanities, Art History, Computer Science, Electronics and Psychology, among others.

Courses include a pre-degree bridging year, 3-year undergraduate degrees, one-year diploma and Masters, and PhD by both research and doctoral programme. Study-abroad students may come for a semester or year. Bridging and pre-session English courses help applicants achieve the required language level, while postgraduate certificate and diploma courses facilitate a change in study area. Entry is in October, except for study-abroad and research students.

What about the facilities?
The library has unusually long opening hours of 79 hours per week in term-time. Many computers are available 24 hours a day, with open access to all computer services such as email and the World Wide Web, and all the campus study-bedrooms are networked. Forty acres of sports pitches and a well-equipped, modern Sports Centre are all on campus. A student JobShop helps overseas students find part-time employment.

How much?
Tuition fees for 2002/2003 are E,405, except for computer/laboratory subjects which are E,655. Single campus rooms cost about E5 per week, or E5 with en-suite facilities. Up to 40 scholarships are awarded annually to doctoral students on academic merit.
