TYPE OF INSTITUTION: Secondary School |

Dedicated to Academic Excellence and Social Responsibility |
| Gulf Islands Secondary School is located in the beautiful Gulf Islands of British Columbia, Canada (to see a map of
the region, click here). Although a relatively small
school of 600 students, ranging from grade 9 through 12, Gulf Islands Secondary boasts an unusually large number of provincial
scholarship winners. The school also exceeds the provincial averages across the board in both Reading and Writing.
The graduating class also exceeded the provincial exam results in Biology, English, English Literature, French,
Geography and Physics. The Physics and Geography results were close to 10% to 15% higher than the provincial
average respectively. In Math and French Language, the class achieved higher pass rates than the provincial
average.

|
Academic achievement, however, is not limited to results on provincial tests. Gulf Islands Secondary prides itself
on its dedication to the whole child and provides a vast array of elective programs with a particular focus on
technology, the performing and visual arts. Course offerings vary from computer animation, to computer assisted
drafting, to jazz band, to sculpture, to the art of fine cuisine. The school also has one of the best career education
programs in the province with close to 70% of our graduating students participating in Career Preparation
Programs.

|
Another strength of the district and Gulf Islands Secondary is its commitment to the district's French Immersion
Program, which features exchange opportunities with students from the French-speaking province of Quebec.
A wide range of programs is offered to accommodate all students. All participating students in our Advanced
Placement Program in English and English Literature earned post-secondary credit for their efforts last year.
|
|
Gulf Islands Secondary School also offers strong student support through it's Life Skills program, the Learning
Assistance program, which features peer tutors, our ESL program (English as a Second Language), the
work-based EXCEL program, our Distributed Learning Center, the Adult Graduation Program and our
community-based alternative program, Phoenix High.

Athletic excellence is also a feature of Gulf Islands Secondary School. Despite our relatively small size, our teams
regularly capture their regional titles, especially in soccer, basketball, cross-country, track and volleyball. Many of
our teams have gone on to represent the school and district at the provincial level. Several of our athletes have
been chosen to participate in the Commonwealth Games and, as is the case for one of our soccer players, has
been selected to represent Canada at the Olympics level.

In addition to the highly successful Summer School of the Arts, the 2002 Summer program has expanded to
include a Computer Camp and an Academic Study Program.
The Summer School of the Arts and the Computer Camp are offered in weekly units. International students can
enrol for as little as one week or stay on for two, three or even four weeks. The daily program starts with two hours
of either artistic or web page based activities, followed by 90 minutes of ESL and an afternoon of recreational
activities, including kayaking, sailing, hiking, frisbee golf, and weekly field trips to destinations like the Provincial
Museum in Victoria, the City of Murals at Chemainus, or the Native Cultural Center in Duncan.
The Academic Study program is a four-week program. Students will attend classes from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 daily.
At this time, Socials 11, Math 11, Chemistry 11 or Information Technology 11 may be offered this year. All courses
will be dependent on a minimum enrolment of 10 students. Tuition for the Academic Study program is $1500 per

an additional $125 Interim Medical fee.
