The University has its origins in the Hartley Institute which was founded in 1862. Now one of the UK's leading universities with a global reputation for teaching quality and research excellence, it offers undergraduate degrees, one year taught masters degrees and three year PhD research degrees in its three faculties:

For every appropriately qualified international student who wishes to study in the UK, we can offer degrees at Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate levels, as well as study abroad opportunities, English language courses. Foundation programmes are offered in Law, Arts, Social Sciences (including Management) Engineering and some Science subjects (Biology, Chemistry and Environmental Sciences.)

Quality and Reputation

The University of Southampton has an international reputation for excellence in both teaching and research. In the last Research Assessment Exercise (a national exercise in which all universities receive scores for the quality of their research for each of their subject areas), 24 subject areas were awarded grade 5* or 5, the best possible. In addition, the University has been ranked joint fifth for the quality of its teaching. Within the UK, our Electronics Department is ranked number one, while our School of Management is in the top ten.

Location:
Located on the south coast of England, about one hour from London by train, the city of Southampton has a population of around 200 000 and is a vibrant and lively city with lots to do and see. It boasts some of the best shopping facilities in the south of England, as well as first class venues for theatre, music and cinema. The University's main campus is 3km from the city centre, attractively landscaped around a green valley. The University's other campuses are located around the city, with the Winchester School of Art, the University's Art and Design centre, located in the nearby historic town of Winchester. All campuses are linked by Uni-Link, the University run bus company.

Facilities and Student Life


Support
The University's teaching and research activities are supported by excellent academic services including dedicated computing services and a library system containing seven different branches. Our Centre for Language Study offers English language support to our international students and there is also a dedicated International Students' Advisor who can help with welfare issues. The personal tutor system ensures that all students have someone with whom they can discuss their academic progress.

Accommodation
Accommodation in a University Hall of Residence is guaranteed to all international students without dependants for the full duration of their course (provided application deadlines are adhered to). The Halls are all located within walking distance of the main campus, and are also linked by the University shuttle bus service. All rooms are single study-bedrooms, some have ensuite bathrooms and all have their own telephones and are networked to the University computer system.


Leisure

The Students' Union has nearly 200 social, cultural, or sporting clubs and societies from which to choose. Sports facilities around the University include indoor sports halls, outside team sport pitches, fitness facilities, tennis and squash courts, a climbing wall, an indoor swimming pool and a boathard. There is also a theatre and an art gallery on campus.
