Saint Maur International School

Even before the word 'International' came into being, the concept existed. In 1872 legations representing over fifteen countries were involved in establishing Saint Maur, the oldest existing international school in Japan.

Saint Maur International School, which has a student population representing over thirty nationalities and more than fifteen among its staff, continues to offer a quality education within a caring family environment to students from the international community in the Yokohama-Tokyo and surrounding areas.

Students of all genders, nationalities and religious denominations from the age of 2 1/2 through 18+ enjoy a multitude of diverse experiences with in the enriching environment that Yokohama and Saint Maur International School have to offer. Through its diversity the school strives to instill within all an appreciation of people and their differences. Through our 'Adult Enrichment Program' we demonstrate and encourage learning as a life-long pursuit to be enjoyed by all, and through the many events and projects that take place during the academic year, we optimize upon the wealth of talent and expertise which exist within the international community to benefit all.

At Saint Maur, education encompasses the entire family, and as such, we work together to create an environment conducive to learning. Something to be perceived as enriching and joyful, as well as a productive preparation for life.

Academic Programs

Montessori School
Saint Maur has a Montessori department that is a very specially prepared environment geared to meet the needs of children from two and a half to five years. Here they pursue their individual interests and gain a very early enthusiasm for learning.

Elementary School

The Elementary School (grades 1 to 5) follows a program of studies which seeks to develop the full potential of the child, not only academically, but morally, creatively, practically, and socially. A balanced core based program with specialized programs such as Art, Music, Language, and Physical Education allow for an easy transition to other English language schools throughout the world.

Middle School

The Middle School (grades 6-8) is a highly supportive and structured program that was developed and implemented to support the social and academic needs of this particular age group. The program provides a well rounded and age-appropriate curriculum, encompassing the means for academic, social, moral/ethical, and physical growth. Students are encouraged to explore and develop new interests and are offered an extensive variety of curricular and extra-curricular activities.

High School

In the High School most students are college bound and the academic atmosphere is reflected by the courses and programs offered and in the standards that are maintained. Students are prepared for the IGCSE, IB, and AP examinations. Saint Maur International School is fully accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS), the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), and the Japanese Ministry of Education.

Sports and Fine Arts
The sports, fine arts, and wider co-curricular program at Saint Maur is key to achieving the practical implementation of our whole school philosophy. Through the program we seek to provide each individual student with the skills and techniques necessary for them to achieve a mode of expression, communication, and reflection which will enable them to develop into adults who are better able to interpret and impact upon the world around them, and who enter adult life in the routine of leading a healthy and active lifestyle.

The sports program at Saint Maur International School takes advantage of a fully equipped Gymnasium and our recently acquired sports practice field, which includes a batting cage and a golf putting area. Students participate in regular competitive and non-competitive matches both in the local area and further fields.

Saint Maur's Fine Arts department is based in a new, state of the art facility housing an auditorium as well as specialist art and music suites. Students have the opportunity to perform both close to home and on tour throughout Japan and the wider world.
