North American- based academic program as well as from their interactions with
students and teachers from different cultures. The grade levels at TYIS are
Kindergarten (5 years old by November 30) through 8th grade (13 years old by
November 30). At TYIS we strive to give students our very best. Our teachers are
diligent, caring, experienced professionals who, through positive interaction
both in and out of the classroom, make a special effort to help students reach
their full potential. It is our sincere hope that TYIS¡Çs multicultural learning
community will enable all our students to develop the academic, interpersonal
and leadership skills necessary to achieve great success. We look forward to

Mission Statement |
| Tokyo YMCA International School (TYIS) offers an education
based on academic excellence, honesty, respect, responsibility, and the
importance of community. Through its multicultural learning environment, TYIS
guides its students to develop an awareness and appreciation of cultural
diversity and individual acceptance. TYIS strives to foster a positive learning
atmosphere, where students will acquire the skills needed to make meaningful
contributions to their local community and society as a whole. |

Curriculum |
| TYIS uses a North American-based curriculum as it
foundation for the core subjects - Language Arts, Reading, Mathematics, Science
and Social Studies. Integrated within this base curriculum are classes in
Physical Education, Swimming, Music, Japanese, Art, and Computer Science. While
English is the language of instruction, English competency for students entering
the school is not required, however, all incoming students are assessed to
determine their English ability. If this assessment shows that the student is
below grade level ability in English, but otherwise able to find success in the
regular academic program, the student will be placed in the ESL program (8:30
-11:15 Mon to Fri) until it is determined that he/she is ready to take part in
the mainstream classroom on a full-time basis. The aim of the ESL program is to
improve spoken and written language skills to near grade level in order for
students to enter their mainstream classroom full-time. In the ESL classes,
students are grouped according to ability as much as possible. All TYIS students
take different 2 standardized tests yearly; the California Achievement Test
(CAT) in April and the Gates McGinnite reading test in September and May. |
Faculty |
| TYIS teachers come from all over the globe to
provide a truly international learning experience for their students. Classroom
teachers must be certified to teach in their home country, and they must
maintain that certification while employed at TYIS. These teachers work together
with specialists in the fields of music, physical education, computer skills and
Japanese language teaching to ensure that each child receives quality
instruction in every area of the program. The balanced curriculum is further
augmented by the ability to provide individualized instruction, where necessary,
to encourage and enrich each student in the best way possible. |
Field Trips & Camps |
|
Students take part in monthly field trips to places of local interest for hands-on learning experiences as an integral part of the curriculum.
At fall and winter camps, students benefit from the fine YMCA outdoor education program. Summer camps, summer school, and winter school are also
popular options for your child. |
Sports and Clubs |
|
|
|
Swimming, soccer, tennis, gymnastics, basketball, music lessons, arts and crafts, and computers are among the options for after school activities
and clubs. Childcare is available every day until 6:00. |
PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) |
|
The Tokyo YMCA International School PTA sponsors several community-building and fund raising events throughout the year.
Many supportive and cross-cultural friendships grow as parents work together for their children,
making life in Japan richer and more fulfilling for all. |
