St. Mary's International School
St. Mary's offers an international, all-boys', K-12 college-preparatory education and has a student body representing over 60 different countries. Our all-boys' enrollment provides an environment free from gender comparisons, and our programs take into account developmental timetables appropriate for boys.

The diverse multi-cultural backgrounds of our students and staff contribute to a special spirit of international understanding and enable St. Mary's to provide a unique educational experience.

Our History
St. Mary's International School, founded by the Brothers of Christian Instruction, opened its doors to 60 foreign boys ranging from kindergarten to Grade Three in 1954. In 1972, the rapid growth of the international community and the demands for quality college-preparatory education in the Tokyo area encouraged the Brothers to move to its current location, a seven-acre (8500 tsubos) site in the Setagaya district, one of Tokyo's rare green residential areas.

St. Mary's has celebrated its 50th anniversary (2004-2005).

Academic Programs
Elementary Program
The Elementary School (Pre-First through Grade Six) follows a program of studies which closely parallels contemporary curricula in the United States. Students are guided through learning experiences in the core subjects of Reading/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Religion. In addition, students develop competency in working skills such as organizing, thinking, problem-solving, as well as oral and written expression.

The Elementary School's structured, yet nurturing environment enhances the learning experience at every level. Specialist teachers and facilities are provided for classes in library skills, computers, art, physical education (including swimming), vocal and instrumental music, and Japanese language. An ESL (English as a Second Language) program is available to prepare non-English speaking students for the mainstream classes.

In addition to the plentiful extra-curricular opportunities offered at the elementary level, students in Grades 4 - 6 spend one week at the St. Mary's ski lodge at Tsumagoi, Gunma Prefecture. A summer school is also provided to give students the opportunity to take a wide variety of enrichment classes or review areas of special need.

Middle School Program
St. Mary's Middle School consists of grades 7 and 8. Recognizing that these students are in a transitional stage of development, St. Mary's strives to provide a highly structured, supportive environment which will enhance self-esteem and personal development. Each student is challenged to excel academically in required middle school core courses as well as further develop his study skills in preparation for high school. Those students who need to increase their English proficiency are provided with ESL (English as a Second Language) support.

Students may select from an extensive list of electives designed to help them explore and develop new interests during these years. They may also participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities, such as  Intramurals, Brain Bowl, Boy Scouts, Jazz Band, Basketball, Baseball, Soccer, Wrestling, Hockey, Tennis, Swimming, Cross Country and Track. In addition, there are many activities throughout the year when St. Mary's collaborates with other schools for dances, skating, bowling, and the traditional Bingo and Carnival.

High School Program
St. Mary's High School follows a customary four-year college preparatory curriculum, including the International Baccalaureate (I.B.) during Grades 11 and 12, which is a rigorous pre-university course of study for academically-gifted students.

Our challenging course of study includes strong emphasis on academics as well as electives in Music, Jazz Band, Art, Latin, Computers, Mechanical Drawing, Yearbook, and Journalism. In addition to the rigorous academic program, many extra-curricular activities are offered, such as Speech, Debate, Brian Bowl, Musical, Roots and Shoots, Leo Club and Boosters. Also, students are encouraged to participate in sports at the Junior and Varsity levels, such as Tennis, Soccer, Basketball, Wrestling, Baseball, Cross Country and Track.

High school is a challenging and enriching experience for St. Mary's boys. Lasting friendships and a lifetime of networking opportunities develop in this unique, all-boys' international environment.
