Program Overview

The Center for Intensive Language Education (CILE) at Carleton University (Carleton) offers specially designed intensive courses to help students develop the skills necessary to use English for academic, professional and personal purposes. CILE is a leader in the development of innovative teaching methods and educational and testing materials for second language learning.

Full-time, intensive ESL courses are available from beginner to advanced levels. Courses focus on integrated language skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Electives vary and include courses, workshops and seminars on subjects such as Film & Media Studies, Business and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).

CILE offers many specialized programs, including a noncredit Diploma in English Language & Teaching Methods for International Teachers and a Diploma in English for Business Communication. Custom programs can be designed for groups year-round.

CILE assists students with accommodation coordination: homestay is available year-round and on-campus residence is available to ESL students during the summer months (May – August). CILE also arranges Health Insurance coverage for the duration of the students' studies at Carleton, as well as organizes social and recreational activities throughout the term.

Students interested in pursuing University Degree studies will have opportunities to explore subject areas as diverse as public affairs, journalism, film studies, engineering, high technology, and international studies and will be eligible to apply for one of our 65 University Degrees once they complete CILE's Intensive ESL program and reach the required English level.
