HORIZON JAPAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
|
Having recently opened its doors in April 2003, Horizon Japan International School (HJIS) is a PreK-6 international school also accredited by the Japanese Government (Gakkou Houjin). One of only three international elementary schools in Yokohama city, accredited by the Kanagawa Prefectural Government, students graduating from HJIS will be able to attend regular Japanese junior high schools as well as other schools abroad. Growing rapidly, HJIS launched its new branch in Tokyo, Shibuya in May 2007. Although the instruction medium is English-based on an international curriculum, for parents who might be concerned about their child's Japanese ability, the school also provides an intensive Japanese language education following the Monbukagakusho guidelines.
The mission of Horizon Japan International School, as a multicultural and
diverse learning community, is to provide students with a high quality
international education and a lifelong passion for academic, social, and
personal success in a safe, supportive, challenging, non-discriminatory and
responsive environment that promotes self-discipline, motivation, and
excellence.
Our goal is to ensure that all students are actively involved in their education
and learn in new and innovative ways. By having classes with low
student-to-teacher ratios, the teaching staff can work closely with each student
to fulfill his/her educational needs. The students have many opportunities to
pursue interesting and challenging academic programs as well as a wide variety
of extra-curricular activities.

Academic Programs
|
Preschool
At HJIS, we believe in "Learning through play", and our curriculum is designed
around that belief. Our Preschool classes (ages 3-4) take part in Free and
Structured Play, Learning Centers, and Group Work. During Free Play, the
children are free to choose their own toys and games helping them to develop
their own personality and tastes. The teacher leads children in selecting and
playing with toys and games during Structured Play, which fosters cooperation
and adaptability. Learning Centers allow children to explore various topics, as
well as their own interests, while teaching them how to work independently.
Group work facilitates teamwork, and helps them to further develop social
skills. Our hope, at HJIS, is that the children will become confident, curious,
and capable learners.
Kindergarten
Our Kindergarten program is for five year old children. Kindergarten is an
important time in a child's life. Learning to get along with others in a diverse
community, building a strong academic base, and following school routines are
only some of the important things established during these years.
At HJIS, we have morning and afternoon meetings in which each student is
recognized by the others as an important member of the class. This helps
students build a strong sense of self and community, both vital components for
international citizens. Throughout the day, we work on a variety of skills
through both hands-on activities and pencil-paper tasks. Although all subjects
are covered to some extent in kindergarten, the primary focus is on language
arts and mathematics.
Elementary School
We aim to make children confident and independent learners and provide many
opportunities for students to demonstrate what they have learned. Learning at
HJIS is generally inquiry-based, where students are encouraged to identify
pertinent questions and construct well-informed answers. The fundamental skills
of reading, writing, listening and mathematics are the focuses of our
curriculum.
Middle School
The Middle School includes grades 7 through 9. It is based on an enriched
American instructional model and provides a creative environment in which all
children can be successful. HJIS has incorporated many middle school concepts in
recent years as we strive to meet the social, emotional and academic needs of
middle level students. The curriculum includes Spanish, History, Geography,
Music, Art and Physical Education. |

After School Programs
|
One of our most distinctive qualities is our caring approach that respects the
individuality of every student. After-school activities ensure that students
have the opportunity to pursue outside interests, develop new skills, and
socialize with their friends. After School programs also contribute to raising
children’s self-confidence as well as academic performance. Students develop
better social skills and learn to handle conflicts in socially acceptable ways.
After School programs at HJIS are challenging and fun. A range of programs are
offered in ten-week sessions. Programs typically include the following
activities: piano, computer, ballet, yoga, science club, soccer, basketball,
table tennis, American football, volleyball, and karate. We also offer many
hands-on programs such as art, origami, drawing, calligraphy, and cooking. For
academic enrichment we offer language clubs and Math and English tutoring for
students who need extra support. |
