A strong supportive academic tradition

Educating citizens of the world since 1875, Wasatch Academy is Utah's only traditional co-educational college preparatory boarding school. The school's 175 students represent 22 countries and 20 states throughout the United States. Wasatch Academy offers a traditional college preparatory academic program with opportunities to suit a variety of interests and abilities for students in grades 9-12. These include such varied options as Advanced Placement classes for potential college credit, honors classes, English as a Second Language classes for international students, and learning support to fill in educational gaps.

Wasatch Academy builds upon its strong legacy by providing a dynamic balance of rigorous academic studies with an unusual variety of opportunities in athletics, community service, cultural enrichment, leadership training and outdoor education. With the extraordinary advances in instructional and communication technologies, our students may easily access information on a global scale while residing in a most spectacular geographic setting. As a result, this unique environment attracts students and faculty eager to engage in our task of educating world citizens.

Faculty as teachers and mentors

Wasatch Academy teachers are role models who provide care and support along with high expectations and sound instruction. The faculty get to know their students' personalities, aptitudes, learning styles and interests. They tailor their teaching methods to meet the needs of the individual learner. Each student is matched with a faculty advisor. Advisors take their role seriously, meeting with advisees often to provide guidance and support in all aspects of life. A close working relationship between parents and advisors enhances the student's experience at Wasatch Academy.

Individual focus to learning

Wasatch Academy recognizes that all students learn differently. Students work with faculty to develop the learning skills necessary to become successful in a college or university setting. Our commitment to the Schools Attuned Program has resulted in the certification of all full-time teaching faculty by The All Kinds of Minds Institute (www.allkindsofminds.org). This endeavor qualifies instructors to accurately diagnose and assess individual student learning strengths and weaknesses and communicate them to students in need as well as parents and other teachers.

Wasatch Academy offers students exceptional opportunities to work in small group settings with teachers. Class sizes never exceed 16 students and average about 12 students. Students benefit from the counsel of teachers in a variety of mandatory and optional study labs in the evenings.

Student life outside the classroom

Wasatch Academy is about learning to live away from home, making new friends, and growing both intellectually and personally. Wasatch Academy's full-time residential staff devote themselves completely to supervising the dorm life. Dorm parents do not instruct in the classroom, but dedicate themselves to the students living in their dorm. Adjusting to living in an academic environment with new friends from around the globe is an exciting challenge. Differences are embraced at Wasatch Academy. It is through learning about others that we are able to appreciate the world and grow.

Weekends are for fun and relaxation with friends and faculty. Students may choose from a long list of activities available each weekend. Students take advantage of recreation trips such as: Sundance Film Festival, river rafting, ballets, Utah Jazz basketball, ski/snowboarding trips, BYU and U of U football and basketball, Shakespearean Festival, camping, horseback riding, Coffee House, cultural plays, bonfires at the Wasatch Academy cabin, star gazing, Sushi dinners, hiking, golfing, Stingers baseball, dances, swimming, mall trips, Utah Grizzlies ice hockey, paintball, Salt Lake Real soccer, movie nights and more depending on the student's interests.

College counseling and preparation for life

College placement is the end result of education at Wasatch Academy. A thorough and varied grounding in academic skills, study and performance are critical as faculty work with students individually to craft an academic program that emphasizes areas of strength while fulfilling the expectations of college admissions. Emphasis on social responsibility, involvement, and leadership are just as important as academic preparation at Wasatch Academy. The balance between high academic and personal expectations as well as Wasatch Academy's ability to provide individual attention to each student is our greatest strength.
