NAME: Aichi International School
LOCATION: Nagoya, Aichi, Japan
SCHOOL SEARCH: K-12
|
 |
Overview |
Aichi International School was founded
in the spring of 2000 with the mission of providing children with a more global-oriented style of education.
Strong communication skills, healthy self-confidence, and a respect for others serve as the three main pillars of the school.
Although the school is now growing upwards of 80 students, every effort has been made to maintain a close family
atmosphere at the school. In this regard, AIS holds numerous special events for students and their families
throughout the year. The school also works hard to recognize and accommodate the special needs of the international community.
|
Location |
AIS is located in central Nagoya, just 10 minutes from Hoshigaoka station on the Higashiyama subway line.
A new state-of the-art building was constructed in 2005, and houses 12 classrooms, a library, concert hall,
open-area learning centers, heated floors, and a courtyard. Furthermore, in an attempt to lead through example,
the school generates close to one-half of its own electricity needs through the use of solar panels on the roof.
Across from the school is a large treed park (Nijigaoka Koen).
|
Curriculum |
AIS follows a hybrid Japanese-North American curriculum,
and is currently seeking accreditation from Japan’s Ministry of Education. Subjects include English language, Japanese language,
Math, Science, Social Studies, Music, Physical Education, Life Skills, and Moral Education. All subjects, with the exception of
Japanese language and Social Studies, are taught in English. In addition, all students participate in a Suzuki-method violin program.
There are also various after-school clubs, sports, and activities.
The AIS curriculum is challenging. In addition to the two language classes (English & Japanese), the 9-year curriculum has been
condensed to 7 years, to allow Junior High students in Grades 8 & 9 to put their energy into focused subjects, cross-subject
studies and SAT preparation.

Staff |
All teachers at AIS hold degrees in education and are certified in their respective countries. Current staff members are from Canada,
Australia, Britain, the US, and Japan. The school’s headmaster, Mr Kim Lutz, holds an undergraduate degree in Music Education
from the Lionel Hampton School of Music (US), and a masters degree in Advanced Japanese Studies from Sheffield University (UK).
He has also published an educational reference book for teachers of young children.

Daily Routine |
The AIS school year runs from April through to March,
with a 1-month summer vacation in August and a 2-week winter vacation in December and January. Recognizing that this calendar may not
coincide with other countries, the school is flexible in meeting the individual needs of its international students.
The AIS kindergarten runs Monday through Friday, from 9:00 – 15:00 with the option of extending to 17:00. The AIS elementary school
runs Monday through Friday, from 8:30 – 15:30, with optional after-school activities running until 17:00.
All students at AIS have uniforms. Elementary school students are responsible for wearing their uniforms daily, whereas the
kindergarten students are responsible for wearing their uniforms on designated days only (field trips, special events, concerts, etc.)
A school lunch is provided for all elementary school students. Kindergarten students have the option of using this service or
bringing a lunch from home. Elementary students make lunch together once a week, whereas the kindergarten students make
lunch together once a month.
