| Richmond is the place to come to, for academic success! |
The Richmond School District, also known as School District No. 38, is a Public School District
in the province of British Columbia (BC), Canada. We are under the governance of the BC Ministry
of Education. As such, we offer the highest quality programs and level of service to our students
throughout their Canadian study abroad experience.
The school district was founded by the government of BC in 1906. We are located in Richmond, a
suburban city adjoining Vancouver. Richmond is home to the Vancouver International Airport.
Major universities such as UBC (University of British Columbia) and SFU (Simon Fraser University)
are within easy commuting distance.
The Richmond School District is British Columbia's fifth largest school district, with eleven
secondary schools, 37 elementary schools, and a student body of nearly 23,000 (12,500 primary
students and 10,500 secondary students) plus currently, 265 international students. The school
district employs 1478 professional staff and 700 support staff, and has an annual operating
budget in excess of Cdn$145,000,000.
As with all public school districts in BC, all teachers must have as a minimum, a university
degree in education or an undergraduate degree with an additional professional teaching
certificate. A great many of our teachers also have master degrees.
For the second year in a row, The Richmond School District has the highest graduation rates
in BC. In the 2004-05 school year 93 percent of Richmond students graduated with a British
Columbia Graduation Diploma, within six years of starting Grade 8. That's a four percent
jump from the previous year and high above the provincial average of 79 percent. Only a
handful of school districts came close to Richmond with graduation rates: West Vancouver
at 91 percent and Coquitlam at 88 percent. In addition, a high proportion of our students
attend post-secondary institutions, including the most prestigious universities in the
world. Our students perform exceedingly well on Provincial examinations, scoring first
in the Greater Vancouver Regional District and third highest in BC. Richmond's
graduating students continue to demonstrate their academic excellence by winning
a significant percentage of provincial government scholarships.
The Richmond International Student Program has been in operation since 1998. The International
Student Program allows overseas students to enter Grades 8 through 12 at selected secondary
schools in Richmond, by paying fees to cover the cost of their education. It gives overseas
students the opportunity to study alongside Canadian students in the public education system,
to the benefit of both. Currently, our International Students come from many countries in
Asia, Latin America, and Europe. They make up less than 3% of the secondary school student
population. We also on occasion, accept elementary school students.
There are typically three reasons for seeking an educational experience in Canada: to graduate
with a high school diploma from a Canadian school; to obtain fluency in English; and/or to
develop a global perspective through contact with Canadian students or other overseas students
coming from around the world. Each of these goals can be achieved in the Richmond School
District's International Student Program.
