Rivendale Montessori was established in 2001 to meet the need for high quality education for young children of all nationalities. The class structure is designed to provide a positive and nurturing atmosphere for children 18 months through 9 years of age.

Our Primary class is for children ages 18 months through 5 years and our Elementary class is for ages 5 years through 9 years. Our program provides a strong foundation in the areas of math, language and reading, while incorporating: history, music, art, grammar, geography and the areas of science.

Our Primary class is bilingual. All Rivendale students study Japanese on a daily basis. These classes are small and focus on gaining confidence in Japanese language skills while increasing vocabulary. The children study Japanese conversation, reading, reading comprehension, and writing.

　

Rivendale follows the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori by encouraging the child to be independent, self- motivated and self-disciplined. Classroom activities allow the child to independently discover the excitement of learning. We, as teachers, encourage this natural ability and desire to learn in a prepared and non-competitive environment. Children learn not to hide their mistakes but to learn from them; to strive for their personal best instead of competing with others.

Montessori is a hands-on approach to learning. The children progress as they master new skills moving ahead when they are ready, instead of at a pace determined by the class as a whole. The classroom and materials are carefully designed and arranged in a progression of difficulty; lessons teach one skill at a time and guide the child from concrete to abstract concepts.

Rivendale has a high academic standard, which allows the child to excel and reach their full potential. We have a deep respect for the child as　a unique individual and it is our goal for each child to have a highly successful learning experience.

　

Our after school program focuses on improving either English or Japanese language skills. Classes are taught by native speakers in a creative and nurturing environment. This program employs the Montessori method and materials to develop the skills of each child based on his individual goals. The classes help non-native speakers to develop a confidence in speaking either English or Japanese at the same time steadily building their vocabulary. We offer extended classes for children to develop their math skills.

The class is designed for children 3-9 years old already enrolled in full day program. Children of all nationalities are welcome.
