NAME: Ookayama International School
LOCATION: Meguro-ku, Tokyo
TYPE OF PROGRAM: International School, grades 6-12 |
 |
| Philosophy |
|
Ookayama International School is a small
school that offers an alternative to the larger international schools in
Tokyo. More traditional schools focus on the group, but at OIS we focus
on the individual, not only academically, but on all the skills needed
to succeed in society. These include areas such as co-operation, creativity,
responsibility, respect for others, and communication. Our goal is to provide
students with an all-round education which will give them the necessary skills
to pursue their chosen careers after they leave school. Students learn in a
relaxed atmosphere which fosters both personal growth and academic success.
|
Student Focused Education |
Education is personalized to suit individual student needs. Class sizes of 1-5 allow for one-to-one tutoring if a
student is struggling with a particular aspect of his or her study. Instructors tailor their methods to suit
individual learning styles, rather than expecting all students to follow a rigid classroom structure. The teaching
staff has extensive experience of teaching students from a variety of backgrounds with particular educational needs.
This translates into quality instruction for every student and ensures the focus on the student is maintained.
Students are encouraged to stay after school in supervised study halls, as teachers are available to give extra
learning support at the end of the school day. Student progress is closely monitored, and faculty members are in
contact with parents on a regular basis.
|
A Flexible Approach |
|
The school offers distance learning programs for grades 6-12. This allows for
many unique opportunities not available in the more traditional school system.
Students may enroll at any time during the year, and if need be, set an individual
pace for their work. Exceptional students are encouraged to take more challenging
courses to better prepare them for post-secondary education. Courses are also
available for part-time students and those who have taken a break from education.
Older students can take classes outside normal school hours if they have other
commitments. Graduation from OIS is not based on age or grade, but rather on credits earned.
|
Accreditation |
|
OIS provides a fully accredited high school education
which has helped numerous students go on to higher education in Japan and overseas.
Students are enrolled on distance learning programs at North Dakota Independent Study
or at The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Independent Study High School. These programs
are fully accredited through the North Central Association Commission and School Improvement (NCACASI).
|
Sport and Activities |
|
We see physical activity as an integral part of the learning experience.
OIS provides a variety of sporting activities for students. Soccer is a regular event at the local park,
and basketball, tennis, badminton and volleyball are scheduled throughout the year at a nearby gymnasium.
Each February students go skiing in Nagano, and there are other excursions each semester.
|
Academic Guidance |
|
All students are provided with academic support when choosing courses,
with a view to ensuring the student is well-equipped for post-graduation life. In the later years,
emphasis is put on SAT preparation, with classes available for math, English and other SAT subjects.
Graduating students are given extensive help with university applications to institutions in Japan,
America, England, and throughout the world.
|
Tutoring Service |
|
Ookayama International School also provides a tutoring service for
students attending other international schools in the Tokyo area. This service caters for students at
both elementary and high school. Classes can be at OIS or at the student’s home, depending on teacher
and student schedules.
