Named after the British explorer Captain James Cook, JCU is Australia's leading tropical research university and Queensland's second oldest university, offering excellence in teaching and research. Our main campuses are based in the coastal northern Queensland cities of Townsville and Cairns with additional campuses in Brisbane and at JCUS in Singapore, offering the same high quality Australian education in a dynamic Asian environment. Over 16,000 students including 3,500 international students from over 100 different countries currently study with JCU.

Research intensive
As a leading research university, JCU provides excellent facilities for teaching and learning. Much research focus is based on the industries and environments of northern Australia including marine biology, tropical environment studies, earth sciences/geology, engineering, tropical health and tourism. JCU receives more than $27 million in research funding each year, is a member of the national alliance, Innovative Research Universities Australia and has as its vision to be one of the world's leading research universities in the tropics.

English Language Studies
Students who do not already meet JCU's English language entry requirements can study English through the JCU-ELC (English Language Centres) in Townsville or Cairns and upon successful completion may receive direct entry (no further IELTS test required) into their preferred degree. www.jcu-elc.net.au.

Significant for JCU students in Australia is the university's unique natural location. The tropical environment that surrounds Cairns and Townsville attracts over two million visitors each year who come to experience the Great Barrier Reef and the islands and rainforests of the Wet Tropics – both World Heritage listed environments.
