The Montessori School of Tokyo |
The Montessori School of Tokyo (MST) has its roots in the Sunshine Montessori School (established 1983) and the Little People Montessori School
(established 1997). For the last 10 years, Sunshine has been run by Pete Juds and during that time, it has developed a reputation as one of the
leading schools for the education of young children in Tokyo. Since its opening in Setagaya-ku, Little People quickly established itself as
an ideal environment for a child's first learning experience.
Due to the commitment to Montessori principles of both Little People and Sunshine, it was a natural progression to the
establishment of an elementary school which will allow families the opportunity to continue their children's education in the Montessori system.
September 2003 will see this vision come to life in the opening of the first Montessori elementary school in Tokyo.
|
Programs |
The Montessori School of Tokyo has three programs,
Little People (18 months - 3 years old), Sunshine (3 - 6 years old) and Elementary (6 - 12 years old).
|
 Little People
For many children, Little People class will be their first learning experience outside the home.
As children in these early years literally absorb the life around them, we pay particular attention to the classroom environment,
sounds they will hear, objects they will see and touch. With kindness and respect, we introduce the real world as they learn through
constructive activities.
|
Sunshine
Sunshine class provides a warm and positive environment where each child can feel comfortable to explore and satisfy their innate
curiosity in the world around them. We focus on the child's individual needs so everyone has the opportunity to discover and
realise their own unique potential while becoming a contributing part of the school community.
|
Elementary

The elementary program provides a full expression of the Montessori principles of self-directed individualized learning in a truly
integrated curriculum. By building on the basic skills acquired in the primary program, the elementary child now moves from concrete
to abstract reasoning. By the time students graduate from the elementary program, they have evolved from four-year-olds manipulating
sandpaper letters, golden beads and sound cylinders into twelve-year-olds dissecting owl pellets, reciting Shakespeare and
calculating the squares of binomials and trinomials.

Mission Statement |
Our Mission Statement "stimulating curiosity while developing independence in thought and action" reflects our belief in what a
quality elementary school should be. It should engender a love of learning and an acceptance of personal responsibility for
intellectual growth as well as social interaction. We believe that MST will offer educational opportunities for students,
unrivalled by any other school in Tokyo.
