INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS IN JAPAN
(POST SECONDARY EDUCATION)

- Where to send your kids to school in Tokyo from pre-kindergarten to college -

By James Yellowlees, Ph.D.

As the demand for international education in Japan continues to grow, the need for quality information on international schools has become increasingly important for both students and parents. In this article, we will look at schools and institutions in three categories: Pre-School, K to 12, and Post Secondary. The primary focus in this article is on schools in the greater Tokyo area (including Yokohama), but information related to other international schools in Japan is available on the Weekender Online.

POST SECONDARY EDUCATION
In the late 1980's there was a post-secondary "boom" that featured mainly U.S. and U.K.-based post-secondary institutions establishing campuses in Japan. Very few of these remain today.

Post Secondary options in Tokyo include Temple University Japan, Sophia University, International Christian University, McGill University (for Executive MBA's) and Lakeland College.

Temple University Japan (TUJ), the most notable exception, began its operations in Tokyo in 1982 and will celebrate its 20th anniversary this year. Kirk Patterson, who came in officially as the new TUJ Dean January 1, has brought energy and ambition to TUJ. Patterson, with a strong academic and private sector background, plans to boost the current number of TUJ students from 1,700 to 4,000 within five years. Conveniently located in Minami Azabu, TUJ offers a wide variety of undergrad, graduate, continuing education and corporate training programs. "As TUJ is able to offer regular Temple University credits and degrees, it is the only institution in Japan that can provide a complete U.S.-style post-secondary education," Patterson noted. Sophia University offers both undergraduate and graduate university programs at its Ichigaya Campus. The program attracts a very international student body and provides students with a well-rounded experience. Sophia Univ. Tel: 03-3238-3179 Fax: 03-3238-3539

International Christian University (ICU) offers undergraduate programs at its Mitaka campus in a beautiful natural setting. Tel: 0422-33-3038~40 E-mail: prc@icu.ac.jp

McGill University offers an Executive MBA program, the MBA Japan Program, on the Yotsuya Campus of Sophia University. Program Director Scott Maltby noted that the program has become increasingly popular with students of various nationalities and that McGill hopes to expand it in the near future. The Tokyo branch of Lakeland College was established in 1991 and offers accredited Pre-Academic and Academic programs in a convenient Shinjuku location. Program Coordinator Luis Poza noted that the Lakeland College programs are very good for students who plan to complete degrees at U.S. institutions. The international school community in Japan is rich and varied and it is reassuring that the level of commitment by all of these schools to provide quality education for our children is so strong.
